A Word of Blessing (Advent Reading Week 4)

A word spoken at the right moment,

How good it is!

Like a custom-made piece of jewelry.

Proverbs 15:23 and 25:11

Words of Peace

Luke 2: 8-20 “In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night.” An angel appeared before them and told them not to be afraid and brought them great news that Jesus, the Savior had been born in Bethlehem. Then a host of angels praised God and sang “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among men.” The shepherds went straight to Bethlehem and worshiped the new baby king. Let’s read our fourth Christmas script and light our fourth candle, the candle of PEACE.

Fourth Christmas Script

Narrator: Jim is a stockbroker on Wall Street. He has a beautiful wife and a 10-year-old son. For several years, Jim has been living the high-life. He spends a lot of time with prospective clients. He is a big spender. He is always trying to impress. He does whatever he needs to do in order to maintain the lifestyle he enjoys. He is climbing the corporate ladder and has no peace in his life. He runs on adrenaline, booze and drugs. Jim’s wife packed up her things and took their son to visit her parents in Vermont. She said that she could care less if Jim joined them or not. She said she needed some space. She couldn’t depend on him anymore. The last straw was Jim forgetting to attend his son’s Christmas concert. Today Jim lost two million dollars in the stock market. He has lost everything. Jim loaded his gun and put it on the passenger’s seat of his truck and headed to the liquor store. He would need a stiff drink to do what he needed to do. Jim buys his liquor from the store and sees a beggar standing outside.

Beggar: Hey mister, can you help out a brother?

Jim: Well, why not. Here, you might as well take it all.

Narrator: Jim gives the beggar all of his remaining cash.

Beggar: Funny, but you don’t look stupid to me.

Jim: What are you talking about?

Beggar: You know, stupid enough to believe all those lies going around in your head.

Jim: How could you possibly know what I’m thinking?

Beggar: You're thinkin' that you’ve blown it. You’re thinkin' that you have nothin' to live for, but the way I see it, you have at least two good things going for you. Jim, things can seem hopeless one minute and then God can turn them around. How ‘bout thinkin' about that?

Jim: Yeh, right.

Narrator: Jim marches back to his car even more determined to put himself out of his misery. He opens his bottle and takes a drink. Jims thinks to himself…

Jim: What nerve. Hey, wait a minute! How did that guy know my name?

Narrator: Jim opens his window and looks, but the old beggar is gone. He reaches over to grab his gun, but the gun is gone, too. Jim opens his door, falls on his knees in the snow and cries out to the only one who could bring peace to his troubled mind.

Question and Comments

How can you find peace in such a troubled and unstable world?

“But, in the midst of our pain and our dashed hopes, there is Jesus, the hero of our story, and He is faithful and true. In all our stories, no matter how bleak they may seem, they lead us to Him, the Lover of our Souls. And He is not done with us yet, the last page of your book has yet to be turned. We don’t doubt that He is real, and we don’t doubt that true joy and peace can only be found in His arms, but sometimes when we reach out to Him for that comfort that only He can give, something always seems to prevent us from feeling that everything is alright in our world. Our feeling may become “Goliaths,” if we are not careful to guard our hearts. It says in Hebrews 4:16, “Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of Grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” We cannot be controlled by those Goliaths in our lives, we need to see them as small when compared to our God.” (Her Treasures, page 162)

Words of Blessing

“… For I will turn their mourning into joy and will comfort them and give them joy for their sorrow. I will fill the soul of the priests with abundance, and my people will be satisfied with my goodness, declares the Lord.” Jer. 31:13-14

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension, will guards your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6-7
